USA postmark San Juan

San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico (a territory of the United States).

Founded by the Spanish in 1521, it's named for John the Baptist.

Like the Philippines, the initial stamps of Puerto Rico when the Americans emerged as victors in the Spanish-American War were overprints of US stamps.

The spelling in the overprinted stamps is PORTO RICO.
